A bigger map would allow for tons of exploration

Yeah it may mean more exploration but that means more delay since they will need to fill all of that extra space with smth, and they have said that they want everything quite detailed so it may make it more months of delay since everything is handmade

Also, I think it’s important for the ocean to FEEL huge - so HOW the game and world is designed, so even if you’ve spent a lot of time in one area, there is still potential to be surprised and discover new things - leaning into the nature of the unknown.

One of the things I most enjoyed about the original game is that you could find yourself in a wide expanse of blue with nothing visible in any direction - but you could HEAR a massive leviathan somewhere under you. These kinds of huge spaces are, of course, everywhere in the real ocean, and are a big part of how the game captured the feeling of isolation and mystery. Whenever you did see a leviathan, its scale and impact was actually heightened by existing in such a massive space. BZ, in contrast, was always crowding colorful objects and tight corridors, which killed the awe of the original. I hope the devs will use the larger map to good effect to produce these expansive, ocean-scale areas.

I would prefer the game being delayed if it is for getting double the map of subnautica 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
This is tricky. A huge map would be awesome, but it runs some risks of (1) feeling boring and redundant, and (2) making travel a nuisance. A smaller map with a lot of intentionally is better than a huge map with a lot of repetition.

Hi there. ‘Huge’ is a relative term. We plan on making the map bigger and deeper than SN1, eventually. That’s the goal, we hope we hit that mark. It won’t be that big on our first early access release please note, we have years of work ahead of us building fantastic new biomes.

crazy idea
definitelo not the vaguest thing ever written

Essentially UnknownWorlds could ADD onto Subnautica2 with expansions (biomes, Quests) for the next 3-5 years AFTER full launch being that UE5 is being used for LARGE worlds already. It would be silly to just make a whole new game since they are already building on UnrealEngine 5 “just like ARC Raiders”

I think the map should be more about expanding downward. SN1 captured that essence of the deeper you go the weirder it gets (except until you get to the lava zone, imo).

Please don’t expand further out east, add some new stuff to the north and west as well as expanding further down

The issue i see is that it doesn’t really “feel” deep when you’re underwater as it did in sub1 and bz. Compare twisty bridges biome of bz or kelp forest of sub 1 with any of the starter areas and there isnt anything to give caution and threat of darkness and getting lost.
The map really does also feel one dimensional in terms of its either to the east or the west. There isn’t that much in north or south. For all the effort put into the anemoni hills (north west) there’s not much of a reason to go there more than on one occasion. There’s very little to find there. You stumble onto the juvenile angel comb very quickly.

as it stands the map is not big enough to support a vessel like the planned trident or a cyclops. When you look at the speed at which you traverse the map with just a wavemaker or tadpole. Then think of the speed at which a vessel of that size will move over it all. Such a vessel works if we’re moving from “world tree” to “world tree” over the whole planet in order to colonize it and make it safe to restart humanity.
The same goes for the creatures. For all the science and thought the dev’s have put into the creatures, there’s no thought to the anount of food they would need and territory sizes of these predators. A predator the size of the leviathan will have a hunting territory in the 10s of kilometers, rather than a hundred meters or so. There’s suspension of disbelief and then there’s going too far.

Yessss map is needed indeed

I wonder if Subnautica 2 will have to deal with floating-pint precision problems like the ones they made in Unity…

Just wanna state again that: IT IS an underwater game. There has to be huge and wide ranges of just deep and nothing but WATER. This is what triggers thalassophobia and makes you feel terrified. Seeing a shadow move in the distance and hearing creepy noises… thats Subnautica
