Self Defense?

Why can’t the multitool work as a self defense weapon? I don’t care if I can’t kill something, but surely smacking a Nibbler or Marrowbreak in the face with a hammer would drive it away for a time? Trying to use the terrain to avoid or hide from a creature is one thing, but I don’t want to be reprinted because I can’t attempt to defend myself if there is no choice. The multitool would be little defense against a leviathan class creature, but it would be nice to be able to defend myself from the smaller creatures. If I can tell NOA “no, I am not offing myself so you can test the reprinter”, then surely I can tell a Nibbler “no” with my hammer.

the larger the fish, the less harm, and more of a stun you could do perhaps.

Are you sure it doesn’t already? I’ve been whacking the big fish with the hammer and there’s a thud and they swim off.

I’ve been hitting the nibblers dozens of times whenever they come near me, they make a noise and leave me alone, so I don’t often get bit.

I was surprised when the Sonic Resonator didn’t push them away.

If you whack a Nibbler with your Multitool once, they’ll back down and exit their noisy hunting mode, and if you manage to whack them a second time, they’ll actually swim off. For like 20 seconds, but it’s better than nothing. I’ve smacked a couple Marrow as well, and I think it made it stop attacking for a second? It was hard to tell.

I have whacked the Nibblers, but it isn’t readily apparent that I ever connected. I do think that hitting them in the head seems to have an effect, but anything to the body/tail does not seem to do anything that I have noticed. Also, the fish that lays in wait in the sand, hitting it as it attacks does not seem to deter it. Hitting it after it has attacked does nothing.

i think it’d be cool if yknow when the marrowbreach opens its mouth right before it bites you if you hit it then in the face it does damage and stuns it and makes it swim away

We could kill basically everything in the first two games, excepting some of the larger leviathans. We should absolutely be able to minimally damage if not kill most of the things in this game.

you could kill the large leviathans in both sn1 and bz, actually. My bigger disappointment in BZ was that I couldn’t replace all the ghost leviathans with the giant whales I bred in containment.

the hammers are a little literally hit or miss and could definently use some better feedback but the repulsor and the flares work pretty well for defense imo.

After having a few more hours in, I have made the sonic mining tool. It does deter the Marrowbreak and Nibblers, but the range is so close it’s tough to use in a tight situation. The parasite fish things around the sick angel combs or the little darting fish in the lava area are too fast to make the sonic tool a useful deterant. I have tried flares but they seem hit or miss for me.

It would be nicer to have special quests to discover and teach the player how one can deal with each species (or research dedicated equipment for that purpose). Perhaps we could even learn to use some behavior in our favor like make the Hammerhead crack open additional quartz from coral for us: https://subnautica2.nolt.io/8257

The multitool does deter nibblers if you get a good hit. For the Marrobeak, its better to focus on the Hungar that usually finds you first and announces you to the Marrobeak.

I want good old Stasis back

Also a giant baitable cage trap that can be towed by the tadpole so I can catch annoying large predators and safely release them far away from my base
