I absolutely love scanning creatures in Subnautica—especially leviathans. With the new feature in Subnautica 2 that lets you collect DNA samples from fauna (and hopefully flora in the future), unlocking unique abilities like a dash or extended oxygen when staying still, I started thinking: what if leviathans could be sampled too?
Obtaining DNA from such dangerous creatures could be a high-risk, high-reward mechanic. Their abilities would need careful balancing—not only because of their potential power, but also due to the difficulty of getting close enough to extract samples and survive the encounter. It would also be crucial to ensure these upgrades don’t disrupt the game’s progression.
I’m not entirely sure how DNA sampling is supposed to work, but if we want to prevent players from killing Leviathans just to collect samples—and instead encourage something closer to the more relaxed scanning approach from Subnautica 1—we could introduce more “indirect” methods of obtaining DNA.
For example, the Collector Leviathan (just making this up) could leave behind claw fragments or similar traces when it grabs or gathers resources, much like how Stalkers drop teeth in Subnautica 1. A Void Leviathan, on the other hand, could be studied through samples taken from its vulnerable offspring or eggs.
This way, each Leviathan would have its own unique method of DNA collection, which could add variety and even a bit of confusion for players as they figure out how each one works. Personally, I find this idea quite interesting, but I’d really like to hear feedback and suggestions to improve or refine the concept.
Still, the idea of earning rare, powerful abilities from the most terrifying creatures in the game feels like a compelling and immersive concept—assuming it hasn’t already been explored or implemented.

Core Concept
The idea centers on extracting genetic material from the game’s most dangerous predators to unlock powerful upgrades (e.g., enhanced speed or specialized survival buffs) without requiring the player to kill the creatures.
Key Features
Non-Lethal Collection: To maintain the series’ focus on observation over combat, DNA should be gathered through “indirect” methods rather than by killing the Leviathan.
Species-Specific Mechanics: Each Leviathan would require a unique approach, such as:
Trace Evidence: Finding discarded fragments (like claws or scales) left behind after a hunt.
Offspring/Eggs: Sampling less dangerous juveniles or nesting sites.
Risk vs. Reward: Balancing the difficulty of approaching these behemoths with the potency of the abilities they provide.
Enhanced Variety: Creating “mini-puzzles” for each species to keep the sampling process engaging and unpredictable.
The Goal
To create a compelling, immersive loop where players are rewarded for studying the ocean’s most terrifying inhabitants, turning late-game encounters into strategic opportunities rather than just threats to avoid.
Yea, It would be really good idea to merge dna and have different traits. Imagine getting a dna sample from a friendly creature, and give the friendly dna trait to leviathan egg and it’ll be friendly leviathan when it grows up. Just a idea.
