Expanding the World: Mercury Rivers, Brittle Crystal Forests and Ground Zero of the Proteavirus Biomes

G

Hello Unknown Worlds Team and community!

To make exploration in Subnautica 2 even more thrilling, I would love to propose three distinctly alien biome concepts. Each area introduces unique environmental hazards and strategic gameplay elements that will force players to craft specialized tech and adapt their piloting skills.

  1. The Quicksilver Sinks
This is a deep-sea volcanic zone where the environment erupts not with lava, but with heavy, toxic liquid metals.
    • The Landscape: Instead of looking like a typical volcanic zone, this area is a cold, mirror-like labyrinth. It features massive, towering pillars of frozen solid mercury and heavy silver rivers flowing across the sea floor, completely unmixed with water due to immense pressure.
    • Chemical Toxicity Hazard: Mercury is extremely toxic. Players cannot explore this biome without crafting a specialized Chemical Protection Suit. Standard vehicles will also take rapid corrosive damage unless equipped with a Chemical Hazard Shielding Module.
    • Electromagnetic Interference: The density of heavy metals causes severe magnetic storms. When entering the zone, the player’s radar, HUD maps, and the AI companion NoA will glitch or temporarily shut down. Hostile fauna here is blind but hunts purely by sensing the electric fields of vehicle engines.

  2. The Shattered Quartz Forests
A mid-depth biome completely dominated by towering, translucent silicon structures that mimic a crystalline forest.
    • Visuals and Atmosphere: Sunlight or bioluminescence at night refracts through these massive glass trees, creating beautiful but disorienting rainbow prisms across the sea floor. It feels like navigating a beautiful, fragile neon maze.
    • Fragile and Dangerous Environment: This biome punishes reckless driving. The crystal branches are highly fragile. If a player collides with them at high speed, the structures shatter with a loud glass-breaking sound, dealing massive structural damage to the vehicle. Navigating here requires slow, precise, and skillful piloting.
    • The Glass Ray: A unique, completely translucent leviathan or medium predator that camouflages perfectly among the quartz trees. It can only be spotted by the subtle distortion of light when it moves, making it a terrifying ambush predator.

  3. The Blighted Spore-Zone
I would love to propose a deep-sea biome that acts as a focal point for the planet’s ecological crisis, heavily tied to the Proteavirus and the decaying World Tree.
    • The Lore: Due to the spreading Proteavirus mutations and the decay of the World Tree, a specific species of deep-sea neon spores has mutated into an aggressive, parasitic force to survive.
    • The Atmosphere: This biome is a claustrophobic, deep system with a massive concentration of global infection. It features heavily altered fauna, including Plague Infectors, Angel Comb Jellies, and newly infected hosts.
    • Zombified Bioluminescence: Infected creatures glow with an eerie, unnatural neon light to lure the player. The parasite overrides their instincts: they become hyper-aggressive, ignore light or noise, emit strange clicking/bubbling sounds, and rush directly at the player like a hive-mind husk.

Thanks for reading! Which of these environments would you be most terrified or interested to explore? Let me know!
