Dynamic Base Biofouling: Seaweed & Algae Overgrowth MechanicBody

Hello team! I have a suggestion for an atmospheric mechanic that could make base maintenance feel more rewarding and immersive, without becoming a tedious chore.

  1. The Concept (Biofouling):Over time (for example, every 10-14 in-game days), base modules built in certain biomes should slowly start to look “alive.” Microalgae, moss, and small seaweeds should gradually grow on the exterior walls and windows of the base.
  2. Visual and Gameplay Effects:Stage 1 (Visual): At first, it’s purely aesthetic. Windows get slightly green and dirty, and the interior lighting shifts to a more dim, atmospheric hue. It shows that your base has been underwater for a long time.Stage 2 (Minor Penalty): If neglected for too long, thick kelp or algae could start covering Solar Panels or Water Filtration units, slightly reducing their power generation or efficiency (by 10-15%).
  3. Cleaning and Automation:To keep it fun and prevent it from becoming a chore, players can handle this in two ways:Early game: Use a basic tool (like the Laser Cutter alternative or a special scraper) to manually clean the windows from the outside once in a couple of weeks. It adds a peaceful, cozy routine of maintaining your underwater home.Late game (Automation): Players can craft a special base upgrade (like a cleaning drone dock or an automated sonic pulse emitter) that automatically keeps the base clean, completely removing the chore for late-game players. This mechanic would make the world feel alive and reactive, showing that nature always tries to reclaim the structures we build.

I think this still sounds a bit too tedious, but I do like the idea of a biofilm that accumulates to a certain degree on the base that you can remove, just to make the water a little more alive

I like this. I’d say just wrap it into the oh so magic repair tool, and somerthing that is done on a compartment by compartment bases, kind of how the habitat builder targets the whole room or the whole connector at its most ‘zoomed out’, and the ‘repair’ takes time linked to the size of the unit, just like deconstructing a larger roomt takes more time. A compact base with a dozen distinct rooms and connectors shouldn’t take more than a minute to clean per stage.

Something I only have to do every 90-120 minutes of game play (although some biomes might make the crud acrue faster). Also be cool if the different biomes made the barnacles/growth unique to that biome grow as seen on the ruined bases of the pioneers/wreckage.

For late game automation, give it a power/frequency setting so that if you want the visual aesthetic, you can keep it for a lower power draw cost than keeping the base pristine.

I didn’t like this at first until I saw the idea that you could get a device to do it automatically :)
