Ladders: I see a few others have commented on it with a complaint but not a reasonable implementation solution. In short, placing them is a royal pain, like I’ve wasted a half hour trying to make a ladder tower of 4 stories work.
I notice that the upper and lower ‘boxes’ are not aligned, presumable to give a sense of ‘stand in front of the ladder at the bottom, and then its behind you once you’ve climbed.’ Thing is… that isn’t really how ladders on ships work or are treated. The kind of ladder we have, that stops at the scuttle, ends with you basically standing over the ladder once you are up (akin to how Sub1 did it). Simply, ladders aren’t stairs. I’d love for something more like what is also called a ladder on a ship, but is really just super steep stairs that work like this, but it would need some additional bounding boxes or space requirements for ‘headroom’ to look good.
So! My suggestions for ladders:
1) Already mentioned elsewhere and upvoted there as well: allow ladders to snap to the wall of the lower room, same as a wall locker.
2) Change the upper and lower bounding boxes to be identical and aligned with the ‘standing room’ facing the ladder like you are about to climb it (ie, how the lower box is)
3) Final a QoL thing, when queuing a ladder on the fabricator, make it autosnap to the floor no matter how I’m looking at it so I can look both up and down to see why my collision isn’t happy and green. Perhaps have 2 blueprints that are ladder up and ladder down instead of having it switch between the options like its trying to cause epliptic seizures when I move minutely.
As far as Stairs
I am thinking of the ~60 degree angled stairs found on ships, like were at the back of the Cyclops in Sub1 that let you go under the engine and access the lower deck. Building these dynamically would require a 2-story buildbox so there is a stairwell, and like I suggest for ladders, I think QoL would be two different blueprints, a going up and a going down.
A note on animations, if climbing animations (like were on the Cyclops), the above ‘stairs’ are climbed like ladders, always facing the treads. A true normal ‘stair’ (which is rarely found on working ships and would more likely be on yachts or cruiseships) pitched at 30-38 degrees would be the ‘facing the way you’re going’ type animation.
