An Open Letter to Unknown Worlds Entertainment: You Missed the Point of Your Own Game
Dear Developers
,I am writing this letter because I am a huge fan of the world you created, but I cannot remain silent about the current direction of Subnautica 2. As a player, I am deeply disappointed in you, because it seems that amidst the big new updates, you have completely forgotten what made the first game brilliant.Don’t get me wrong: the inclusion of the official 4-player co-op multiplayer mode in Subnautica 2 is a fantastic and long-awaited feature. It’s wonderful to explore the ocean with friends. But what is multiplayer worth if you have stripped out the very core of the gameplay, the true meaning of progression, and the weight of the deep ocean? Co-op is only good if four of us are bored at the same time in a sterile aquarium. What is missing the most from this game? The true sense of discovery, comfort, and awe that only a massive submarine could provide. It is true that you added new vehicles to the game, but let’s be honest: they cannot replace a real submarine. Driving a proper submarine like the Cyclops was the absolute best part of the game because of the incredible visibility. You could stand in the pilot cabin, look through that massive glass window, and beautifully see the vast, terrifying ocean opening up right in front of you.Furthermore, the Cyclops felt like a real home. You could put a bed inside and literally sleep in the deep ocean, and the built-in storage locker system that came automatically with the submarine was absolutely genius for hoarding your hard-earned materials. On top of that, the energy management system was magnificent with its power cells and custom configurations. The Cyclops wasn’t just a vehicle; it was a beautifully designed, self-sustaining mobile fortress where we felt safe even in the darkest trenches. Swimming around in small, soulless scooters or tiny capsules completely ruins this majestic gameplay loop. Without a huge, upgradable submarine like the Cyclops with a proper bridge to look out from, the true weight and scale of deep-sea expeditions are completely lost. The same goes for combat and base defense. You stubbornly hold onto the idea that this is a peaceful survival game where predators should only be avoided. But this destroys the immersion! If I build a state-of-the-art, nuclear-powered underwater base right in Leviathan territory, the bare minimum should be that I have to defend it from those beasts. The fact that bases are indestructible completely kills the tension. Why are there no built-in automatic defense turrets, torpedo systems, or base sieges? If you, as developers, were afraid that weapons would make the game too easy, you are terribly wrong! You shouldn’t have removed the weapons; instead, you should have made the monsters and Leviathans much stronger and smarter! If the predators were more brutal and posed a real threat to our base, then implementing defensive weapons and turrets wouldn’t ruin the game—it would create a brilliant, high-tension survival experience. There would be absolutely no problem with this approach; in fact, the gameplay would be amazing and fair.Look at the modding community: players had to code base defense and build the Beluga (Atlas) submarine themselves for Subnautica 1 because you denied it to us.Because of this stubbornness, Subnautica 2 currently gets a 4/10 rating from me. Unreal Engine 5 looks nice, co-op is great, but as a Subnautica game, it fails because there are no stakes. In contrast, Subnautica 1 is an unquestionable 10/10 masterpiece because it actually made sense. Every depth reached, every view from the Cyclops glass, and every upgrade had a purpose. Please, finally listen to the community: bring back large submarines like the Cyclops with great visibility and amazing built-in storage and energy systems, make the monsters stronger, and add base defense weapons to the game, because your fans don’t want a sterile sea walk—they want a true survival journey!
Dude the devs said they were adding a “big sub” in the first major gameplay update, which comes out later this year. This is kind of the whole point of EA, nothing is set in stone, and nothing is safe from change. I agree that a large submarine would definitely add to the gameplay as well as the atmosphere, and I appreciate the passion you display here, but just wait a little while, the devs will grant your wish very soon.

oh my ∗∗∗ im shocked how you live under a rock they are adding a big sub everyone knew this like 2 months ago and this is prob made by ai

they’re adding a big sub, you don’t wanna play Subnautica you want to play an underwater fighting game :)

That’s a whole lot of text that says nothing at all

Im so surprised that how unaware you are of the Subnautica 2 development and what coming next and what not, but you made it to Nolt. I did not expect a person living under a rock to be here.
