Goal: make voice chat seem plausible and immersive.
The way voice chat works right now takes you out of the game sometimes. It’s odd that you can hear your friend speak when they are dying. Or that you can hear them talk calmly while they are currently being bitten. These things reminds the player that this is just a game and ruins the immersion.
Some ideas are:
-When dying (fx losing oxigen) don’t let that player speak. You could instead give a death notification on the screen of the other players. But it would be even better if the other players had to deduce that you are down. So for example, when you speak replace it with pre-recorded gasps or replace it with noise. Something to let the other players know something is wrong.
-When being attacked by something, the voice chat should be replaced with morphed or mumbled sounds or noise.
-When far away, add noise to the voice and morph the sound. Make it stutter. Make it sound like the radio is on the wrong frequency so to speak.
You could look at the game Peak to see how these things can be done quite well. It really improves the experience.
