Sorry for the same idea over and over but I don’t think anyone’s seeing this enough
I love the kelp forests in the original, and I’d love to see a comeback. Devs don’t have to use this specifically, but this is my idea for the kelp forest and a possible deep version.
Appearance: A long branch with many mouths on it, which are small and can close or open. There are twirly branches, which are its arms, that come from below each mouth and look like the Pneuma, which are disguised in the kelp. On the branches, small arms can grab and shove prey into the mouths. the arms are spinny and that’s where the name comes from!
Rotorkelp: ‘Altovitinema vadosus’ A large carnivorous living stalk of mouths and air-filled branches that hide Pneumas.
Diet: Rotorkelp takes advantage of the Pneuma’s reliance on its protection and disguise, eating any predators that attempt to hunt Pneumas. When it finds its prey, the Rotorkelp stalk takes the creature with its arms and slowly bites off chunks of its prey, which goes down the hollow stalk into the bulb-shaped stomach where the ground meets the creature. Though because this isn’t an entirely sustainable source of fuel, it also uses photosynthesis at the tip of its stalk.
Relationship with the Pneuma: Rotorkelp provides an excellent hiding spot and defense for a Pneuma, and Rotorkelp benefits from the food source that it brings, which are its predators.
Spread: The Rotorkelp dispenses egg-shaped orbs out of the top of the stalk, which appears to have a cloned version of the parent inside, that floats to a nearby location on the ocean floor. This egg then breaks open and the creature previously inside the egg starts developing independently.
Assessment: Pneumas hide alongside the Rotorkelp. Disturbing the fish may alert the Rotorkelp stalk to bite.
Deep Rotorkelp: ‘Altovitinema abyssalis’ A large carnivorous living stalk of acid-spewing mouths and bioluminescent acid-filled arms.
Diet: Deep Rotorkelp eats anything if can take down with its dangerous hunting method, spewing acid from the arms through its mouth. The large stomach at the bottom has many long tendrils that are similar to roots, which are used for grabbing dead prey off of the seafloor and pushing it to the mouths on its stalk.
Relationship with the Deep Pneuma: The Deep Pneuma slurps up corrosive acid from nearby dead (CREATURE THAT USES ACID)s and spits it out to the Deep Rotorkelp stalk. The tendrils of the Deep Rotorkelp attached to the stomach slurp it up and dispense it into the stomach, which it spits up later.
Spread: The Deep Rotorkelp dispenses egg-shaped orbs out of the top of the stalk, which appears to have a cloned version of the parent inside, that floats to a nearby location on the ocean floor. This egg then breaks open and the creature previously inside the egg starts developing independently.
Assessment: Avoid, may spew acid.
