SUBNAUTICA: THE DEEP BLUE — MOD CONCEPT

DEEP BLUE LEVIATHAN

The Deep Blue Leviathan is a new hostile Leviathan designed around stealth, ambushes, sonar, and psychological horror rather than speed.

SIZE

The Deep Blue Leviathan is approximately the size of an adult Ghost Leviathan found in the Void.

It is no longer intended to be the largest hostile Leviathan in Subnautica. Its enormous size is still intimidating, but its size is balanced by its extremely slow movement speed.

The Deep Blue Leviathan is the slowest hostile Leviathan in Subnautica.

This gives the player a chance to escape if they detect it early enough.

APPEARANCE

The Deep Blue Leviathan uses the Sea Reaper design from Melon Sandbox as its visual design.

Its body is long, dark blue, heavily armored, and covered with large spikes and appendages.

It has two enormous long, spiked appendages extending from the sides of its body.

These appendages function as its primary hunting arms.

Its eyes glow like other Subnautica Leviathan eyes.

The eyes are positioned on the sides of its head, similar to a horse.

Because of their position, the Deep Blue Leviathan has limited forward vision.

It primarily relies on sonar instead.

SONAR

Approximately 95% of the Deep Blue Leviathan’s location detection comes from sonar.

Only around 5% of its detection relies on normal eyesight.

The Leviathan can detect movement and sounds made by the player.

Loud activity can attract it, including:

  • Seaglide movement
  • Vehicle engines
  • Drilling
  • Propulsion/Repulsion Cannon activity
  • Explosions
  • Other loud underwater activity

The player can potentially use sound as a distraction by creating noise away from their actual location.

THE DEEP BLUE GRASSLANDS

The Deep Blue Leviathan lives primarily in a new biome called the Deep Blue Grasslands.

The biome is a mid-to-late-game area.

Like the Lost River and Lava Zone, the player must travel deep downward to reach it.

The Deep Blue Grasslands are both beautiful and extremely dangerous.

The biome contains:

  • Huge open grasslands.
  • Giant glowing blue plants.
  • Neon-blue vegetation.
  • Large caves.
  • Hundreds of mineral and gem deposits.
  • Copper.
  • Titanium.
  • Sandstone outcrops.
  • Limestone outcrops.
  • Other resource outcrops.

The biome is extremely useful because of the huge amount of valuable resources scattered throughout it.

The player is therefore encouraged to explore the biome despite the danger.

DEEP BLUE LEVIATHAN BEHAVIOR

The Deep Blue Leviathan is an ambush predator.

Unlike Reapers and many other hostile Leviathans, it does not simply chase the player continuously.

It hunts.

It can hide inside:

  • Giant blue vegetation.
  • Deep caves.
  • Dark areas of the biome.
  • Other environmental structures.

It waits for prey to pass nearby before suddenly attacking.

SOUND TRACKING

The Deep Blue Leviathan can deliberately investigate sounds.

For example:

The player is mining resources.

DRRRRRRRRRR

The player stops.

Everything becomes quiet.

The Leviathan begins moving toward the player’s last known location.

The player can use sound strategically to distract the Leviathan.

FALSE SILENCE

When a Deep Blue Leviathan enters an area, the surrounding environment can become unnaturally quiet.

Normally, the Deep Blue Grasslands contain:

  • Fish sounds.
  • Ambient underwater noises.
  • Creature noises.
  • Environmental sounds.
