This is a topic that has had many posts made about it already, but I want to add my own take on it: The leviathan music should have a separate volume slider to ambient music, and should have multiple toggleable options for how it plays.
Option 1: Current setup, where the quieter portion (hereon out referred to as “territory track”) plays when you enter a leviathan’s territory, the music gets louder the closer the leviathan is, and the louder portion (hereon out referred to as “aggro track”) kicks in once close enough.
Option 2: Leviathan music turned off completely.
Option 3 No territory track, but the aggro track remains and kicks in only when the leviathan makes itself known (aggressively) or only when you’ve seen it going in for the attack. As a result the ambient track for whatever biome a hostile leviathan inhabits doesn’t get cancelled out by the territory track, and removes that “hey impending doom is approximately this far away” byproduct of the territory track which many players have issue with (I think this should be the default option).
Option 4: Same as option 3, but the territory track will play if you’ve previously encountered a hostile leviathan in the surrounding area (ideally this should only apply to the part of the territory you’ve encountered it in, not the entire territory). Essentially does the same job as option 3 but includes tense music for those who see it as more fitting (maybe this should instead be the default option, though I personally prefer option 3).
The volume slider for the leviathan music should probably be split into 2 sliders for the territory and aggro tracks, further adding customisability to the music in case anyone were to think one is too loud or quiet.
My biggest issue with the leviathan music is the fact it’s a dead giveaway not just for the presence of a hostile leviathan but also how close it is. It’s more scary to be caught off guard and be suddenly put into fight or flight mode unexpectedly. And regardless of if I do or don’t want the territory track, I want its volume and presence to be separately toggled from the aggro track. If I know danger is in the area or expect it to be, I don’t need the music to tell me, and I especially don’t need it to tell me what proximity the danger is at.
