One of my favorite aspects of Subnautica 1 was that almost every little plant, creature, and coral had a data entry when scanned. As someone who loves realistic creature design, I adore being able to read and learn about the amazing world the developers have created and the underlaying scientific concepts that drive their unique creatures. It was a little surprising to me that, after crossing into the observatory biome, there were so many plants and corals that weren’t scannable. I wanted to know so badly what the story was behind the strange Betelgeuse looking hands in the caves around the infected angel comb, and found it a little disappointing when there was none. I am hoping this is just because the game is still in development, because it genuinely was one of my favorite things in Subnautica 1. It just makes the already astonishing worldbuilding feel so much more immersive and dynamic, especially with the innate human instinct to be curious.
