A large part of what makes Leviathans so terrifying is that they are so far away, but they COULD be closer. Currently, the very strict bounds of where a Leviathan can and cannot go allow for things to be gamed a little bit, which, while good for my heart, takes away some of the tension of rushing to safety knowing there’s a hungry squid just behind.
For the trench and the Leviathan hiding within it, nothing would be more frightening than rushing to some crevice, turning around, and seeing the Leviathan -trying to reach in after you.- Knowing that your survival depends on this massive creature growing bored and leaving before your air runs out. Creeping out slowly from your hiding place to confirm that the giant thing has left in a direction, visible only by the massive shadow it leaves in the water, and choosing to flee in any direction but that one.
Leviathans should be horror movie monsters. Mr. X from Resident Evil, or Jason from Friday the 13th. I want to look at a leviathan and feel the same sense of awe and fear I would get from a tornado. I don’t want a gamified, hostile creature. There’s plenty of those, and they’re very well done. I want a Living Force of Nature that makes me reconsider what winning the game actually means, if it means I can avoid ever actually facing it.

@NecessaryIndication529 – “They’re not monsters, Lex. They’re animals.” (Just a little Jurassic Park reference there.)
Their AI is unfinished. I’m sure we’ll see more complex behaviors in the future. In the meantime, I’m enjoying their strict boundaries from a leviathan/alien observatory…observatory habitat. :)
