Custom base supports

Being able to place custom base supports would be neat, the auto generating pillars are inconsistant, and often leave my bases floating unrealistically, would like to put pillars and custom angles, maybe even the ability to build them upside down, so my base is “hanging” from the ceiling, rather than supported from below.

Yeah, it would be nice if we could at least build some kind of structural framework for the rooms themselves. You could handle it by allowing the framework to be rotated in 90° increments, so players could build on walls and ceilings as well. There would probably need to be some restrictions, though, to keep the resulting structures at least somewhat physically believable.
It would be great if the developers expanded the building system somewhat in that direction. I wouldn’t be surprised if something similar is already planned or at least on their own wishlist.

One possible solution could be to let players build a floor, ceiling, or side structure first, instead of placing a room immediately. Support legs could then be generated automatically from those pieces, similar to how the current system works or you choose were they should be.
The room itself could then be attached to that structure, with a simplified physics check to determine whether it counts as properly supported.

The current support-leg system can look pretty terrible at times because the legs are always placed at the outer edges, even though some room layouts could realistically be supported in other ways. And there’s nothing worse than making a tiny extension to a room and ending up with an extremely long, thin support column sticking out underneath it.

That said, I think this is also a question of what works well from both an engine and usability perspective without becoming an unreasonable amount of work for the developers. And honestly, I’d be happy with freely placeable support structures as well.

I saw developers constructing supports for habitats rather than them being automatic in a promo video. It’s definitely possible, though they may be having some issues getting it working adequately/consistently.

I especially can’t stand automatic supports that wind up 40 feet high and supports underneath shallow alcoves and such that look like they would be supported just fine by the main supports of a habitat.

Yeah, the legs tend to become quite tall and flimsy looking. They should either be made thicker automatically or at least allow players to reinforce them manually.

It could also be useful to let players add cross-bracing between the supports, or even build a full glass or steel wall between them for additional stability from an aesthetic standpoint.
