The message inside of the Alien Observatory from the Axum to the Architects asks them to “Cross the great trench to Xanadu”. Which to me sounds a lot like swimming across a void equivalent to the “World Tree”.
This would be very exiting but also terrifying venture which I can imagine some players might be too scared as to even attempt it.
It might be made easier/faster by traversing it with a big vehicle (Dataminers/Youtubers already found supporting evidence in the unfinished Trident -potential Cyclops equivalent- and it being somewhat resistant to creature/leviathan attacks; but this is unconfirmed and still in development).
But I (and others probably as well) would likely enjoy a less scary and less bottomless, but also less straightforward way to get to the “World Tree”
My suggestion: Hollow Roots
After exploring the first area thoroughly and clearing a lot of Bloom (both story-related as well as optional) the NoA could detect a root/bloom-survey base in a cave system near the beginning of the trench. After clearing the entire bloom from this root (could also include a bloom infested creature/leviathan wrangling), the now hollow shell is all that remains.
From there you can stock up on air (either with oxygen tanks or use a carryable oxygenator) to pass through the trench on fins (or on foot?), as it’s entrance is too narrow for vehicles to fit through (at first; another bloom node could be located on the other end of the root which, when destroyed hollows it out more and allows tadpoles to fit). The root would either be hanging in-between the two trench sides like an enclosed bridge, or a tunnel going entirely beneath it.
While crossing one could hear leviathan sounds for some short scares.
But the trench isn’t yet in the game and I can’t clearly confirm what it is really meant to be. The (awesome) UW team might have already thought of something.
Anyway, thanks for reading >{:) <- Fih
TL;DR instead of (theoretically) crossing the deep and scary trench to the World Tree in an armored submarine, you swim beneath/between both sides through a hollow root. Now no longer thalassophobic but claustrophobic (there can’t only be one)!
Whatever they do will be good but alternatives would add dept.
