A New deep-sea creature

E

While watching The Deep, I came across a fascinating creature concept that I believe would fit perfectly in Subnautica 2. The inspiration comes from a scene in the show’s YouTube video (

) at approximately 15:04, where a colony of small mimic octopus-like organisms functions as a collective hive mind. Individually, each organism is relatively small, but together they can coordinate their movements with incredible precision to form larger shapes and imitate complex creatures and objects.
What makes this concept so interesting is its versatility. The swarm can combine to mimic larger sea creatures, objects, or even humanoid forms. This allows it to hunt prey by disguising itself as something familiar, hide from predators by blending into its environment, or escape danger by rapidly changing shape and breaking apart. Unlike a traditional animal with a single body, this organism behaves more like a living colony, with every individual contributing to the larger whole.
One of the most intriguing aspects shown in The Deep is that the swarm is capable of mimicking not only living creatures but also large artificial objects. For Subnautica 2, this could mean the organism is able to imitate vehicles such as the Tadpole or other submarines. Imagine spotting what appears to be an abandoned vehicle resting on the seafloor or drifting in the distance. As you approach, expecting valuable resources or clues, the “vehicle” begins to move unnaturally before unraveling into thousands of coordinated organisms. This ability would make the creature exceptionally dangerous because it could exploit the player’s curiosity and familiarity with technology.
For Subnautica 2, this could create some incredibly unique gameplay and horror elements. Imagine exploring a dark underwater cave and spotting what appears to be a harmless fish, only to realize it is actually thousands of tiny organisms working together. A rock formation on the ocean floor might suddenly shift and reveal itself to be a living creature. Even more unsettling, the swarm could imitate the silhouette of the player from a distance, creating an eerie sense that something intelligent is watching and learning.
The creature could also have advanced AI behaviors. It might adapt its disguises based on nearby wildlife, use mimicry to lure prey into ambushes, imitate damaged vehicles to attract scavengers, or separate into smaller groups when threatened before reforming elsewhere. In particularly rare encounters, it could even construct massive temporary forms that resemble large creatures or pieces of technology, making it difficult to determine what is truly alive and what is merely a disguise.
From a lore perspective, the organism could be explained as an evolutionary marvel that developed extreme cooperative intelligence. Instead of growing into a larger body, the species evolved to share information across thousands of individuals, allowing the entire colony to function as a single creature. This would make it one of the most alien and mysterious lifeforms in the game’s ecosystem.
The idea combines real-world inspiration from mimic octopuses with science-fiction hive mind behavior, creating a lifeform that feels both believable and alien. Because Subnautica is known for introducing unique and mysterious creatures, a colony organism capable of forming larger shapes, mimicking vehicles like the Tadpole, and disguising itself as other lifeforms could become one of the most iconic, intelligent, and terrifying creatures in the game.
