I believe the current system of unlocking biomods through bioscanning is somewhat unsatisfying. Being told exactly which exact creatures to scan to unlock each biomod feels a bit cheap and video-gamey. My proposal is that the player should instead be given more vague directions for the types of creatures that will unlock given biomods.
For example, Threat Sense could be unlocked by scanning various types of prey fish and Slow Metabolism by scanning omnivores. Different creatures could provide different amounts of progress, with more uncommon or dangerous ones being worth more.
More exclusive biomods like Sonic Echo could still be unlocked by scanning one specific creature, for example with the hint telling the player to scan a leviathan that exhibits behaviour similar to that of the biomod’s.

This is such a great idea! To tack onto this, allowing for biomod scanning earlier in the game would give a far better feeling than having to back track to initial areas, and would really encourage players to scan EVERYTHING. Knowing you can get some sort of hunger based biomod by scanning enough creatures that scavenge for scraps on the seafloor would make players so much more keen on identifying every different species around that could fit the bill as well as be more willing to venture out to see what else they can find out in the world.
