The game's introduction feels like a tutorial

I’m not sure I’m a big fan of the introduction of Subnautica 2.

I can still remember the one minute cinematic at the start of Subautica 1 : an alarm, some unclear speech about an accident and all you could see was the interior of the lifepod. All of a sudden, you’d wake up in the middle of an alien ocean knowing nothing and all you’d see was water and the crashed Aurora. Even the PDA at this time had only 2 lines of text, telling you your one and only objective : to survive in an alien world. So much mystery, so much context and information missing !! This is what made the lore of the first game great, in my opinion : finding out about everything, piece after piece when finding all the lifepods and realising slowly the horrifying fact that you were the only survivor.

To this day, this is one of if not the greatest game introductions I’ve ever seen.

I understand that Subnautica 2 has some new concepts and game mechanics to introduce, like the whole thing about the pioneer being “printed” and the genetic mutations, but the first 10 minutes of the game make you read soooososo sooo much text, give you so much explanation about so many things that it doesn’t give that “unknown” effect as much (I had the impression of following a biology lecture which wasn’t all that fun to be honest) : it feels like a tutorial. The introduction would be more shocking and remarkable with a short cinematic and only the strict minimum of information, the rest could be introduced in some other way via the gameplay.

I remember one thing from the introduction that gave me that same vibe from the first game : the line “Pioneer, you are not on Zezura.” This is the kind of thing that really sets the mood and reducing all the information given before that would increase the mystery around it and the thrill of the whole thing.

I may sound harsh but I really don’t mean it, I’ve been a huge fan of the series since the early access days of subnautica 1 and I couldn’t be happier to see such a devoted and passionate team working on this game.
Good luck with everything and keep up the good work !
